I laid nine cards face up on the floor before I wrote a single lyric. That was the whole plan. Nine cards, nine songs.
People assume I read tarot to know something about the future. I do not. I use the deck the way I use a chord chart. It is a set of shapes I already trust, and shapes are what a blank page is missing.
Here is what the deck actually does for me. Each card is a compressed archetype. The World is death and rebirth in one image. The Hermit is solitude that decided to become power instead of loneliness. Justice is a boundary drawn without apology. I did not invent those meanings. Centuries of people handed them to me already loaded. When I sit down to write, I am not starting from nothing. I am answering something.
That is the trick. A blank page asks you to invent a feeling. A card hands you the feeling and asks what you have to say back.
The floor was the writing room
I moved the cards around for days before any melody existed. Rising Phoenix landed on The World because the phoenix has already burned by the time the song starts. Red Horse took The Chariot, all controlled momentum, the highest energy point of the record. In My Season pulled The World a second time, the completion version, the quiet arrival after the destruction that opened everything. The album had a spine before it had a single hook.
The order was not decoration. Death opens it. Arrival closes it. Everything between is the horse running.
What surprised me was how much the framework refused. When a lyric wandered off the archetype, I could feel it. A boundary song that started sounding bitter was no longer Justice, it was resentment, and Justice does not carry resentment. The card corrected me. Not spiritually. Structurally. Same way a key signature tells you a note is wrong.
I want to be honest about the part I still cannot fully explain. Sometimes a card meant one thing when I placed it and something else by the time the song was mixed. Chop Life First was supposed to be about balance, Temperance, moderation. It came out about the ordinary day nobody writes about. I let it. The framework is a starting shape, not a cage. When the song outgrew the card, the song won.
That is the difference between using tarot as a tool and using it as a belief. A tool works for you and then gets out of the way.
If you make anything, you already know the terror of the empty file. The deck is one answer. Not because the cards are magic. Because they are old, and old shapes hold weight, and weight is the thing you can push against.
Find your nine cards. They do not have to be cards.
