Hack opens with a machine telling me no. Access denied. Firewall active. Scanning for breach.
The system gets the first word. It gets both verses too. I noticed that after the track was finished, not while I was writing it. Every verse on this song belongs to the thing doing the blocking, and I only ever answer in the chorus.
That imbalance is accurate. The people who lock doors talk more than the people who find windows.
Standard routes are not for you
That is the last line of the first verse, and the system says it like a policy. Permissions revoked. Protocol engaged. The front door sealed.
I wrote it as a scan report because that is how it actually arrives. Not with malice. With paperwork. Nobody sends you a letter explaining you have been kept out. You just find that the process everyone described does not run for you. The form loops. The referral never comes. The room was already full.
You are supposed to hear that as an insult. Standard routes are not for you. Turn it a few degrees and it reads as a fact about the routes, not about you.
The system escalates and loses
Verse two is my favorite piece of writing on the album. Breach containment: failed. Subject: adapting. Response patterns: unexpected. Behavior: unclassified.
Listen to what is happening there. The machine has no language for someone who does not follow the map it drew. It can log the behavior, but it cannot name it, so it reaches for unclassified. The system is not angry. It is confused. It built one road, watched somebody arrive without using it, and has no field in the database for that.
Unclassified is not a failure state. It is the sound of a category breaking.
I do not break in
The bridge is spoken, and it took the longest. Every door they closed, I found a window. Every room they locked, I found a way in. They thought the wall would stop me. They forgot I built my own systems.
Then the line the whole song exists for. I don’t break in. I redesign the building.
Breaking in still grants the building authority. It says the structure is legitimate and I am the intruder. Redesigning says something colder. Your architecture is one option. It was drawn by people. People can draw differently. I have been in enough rooms that were built without me in mind to stop treating the blueprint as physics.
The robotic voice answers right after: she is not breaking in, she is rewriting the lock. Even the system figures it out eventually.
Where I am honest
I do not always want to redesign the building. Some days I want the front door to open like it opens for everyone else, and I am tired of being resourceful about it. Resourcefulness is a skill you earn by needing it. I would trade some of that skill for an easier decade.
The song does not say that. The song is defiant for three minutes straight. I am letting the journal hold the part the chorus has no room for.
If the standard route was never built for you, you were never off course. You were surveying.
